Durden was named the Pac-12 Men's Swimming Coach of the Year for the fourth year in a row in 2012-13 after a season in which Cal was undefeated in dual meets (7-0), claimed its first conference title since 1981 - upending Stanford's streak of 31 straight conference crowns - and finished second at the NCAA championships.

Durden, who led Cal to NCAA team titles in 2011 and 2012, sent a league-high 16 swimmers to Indianapolis for the NCAA meet in 2013. His squad entered the NCAA Championships with a No. 2 national ranking, and Cal swimmers claimed two individual national titles (100 and 200 fly by Tom Shields) and three runner-up finishes at the national meet. The Bears have finished either first or second at the NCAA championships in four of Durden's past six seasons at the helm.
