Tennis Team Visits Juvenile Detention Center

TUCSON, Ariz. – Several players from both Arizona men and women’s tennis teams visited the Pima County Juvenile Detention Center on Saturday to talk with minors who have had previous run-ins with the law.

The athletes talked with a group of approximately 30 kids ranging in age from 10-15 to discuss the importance of goal setting and staying on track in order to reach their ambitions.

“Both the men and women’s players spoke very well,” said senior Kieren Thompson. “The kids paid attention, and I think they really listened to what we said.”

The athletes benefitted too, as they glimpsed into lives far different than their own.

“From our perspective, it made us understand how privileged we are,” said Thompson. “These kids have struggled, and may not have good family lives, financial stability, or role models. It reminded us that people right here in Tucson could use some help.”

For both teams, this adds to a string of community service events participated in as they commence their spring seasons. The men begin Jan. 17 in Albuquerque, N.M., while the women kick of their season by hosting Northern Arizona Jan. 25.
