Pac-12 announces tennis players of the week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC junior Yannick Hanfmann and STANFORD senior Kristie Ahn were voted Pac-12 men’s and women’s tennis Players of the Week for play from Jan. 28-Feb. 2, the Conference office announced today. 

Hanfmann, a native of Karlsruhe, Germany, served up two singles upsets and paired with teammate Ray Sarmiento for two more doubles wins to help the fourth-ranked Trojans to two big wins over SEC opponents in the first edition of the Pac-12/SEC Showdown. In the opening match against third-ranked Georgia, Hanfmann posted an upset victory over No. 21 Nathan Pasha in two sets before taking out No. 12 Ben Waglund and Hernus Pieters to help USC upset the Bulldogs, 4-0. The next day, Hanfmann and Sarmiento secured the doubles point against No. 11 Florida, defeating Mike Alford and Stephane Piro on court one. The junior sealed the 4-0 win over the Gators by upsetting Piro in straight sets. Hanfmann is now 8-1 overall in singles and 3-0 in doubles with Sarmiento. The Trojans are now 3-0 on the year. 

Ahn swept her singles and doubles matches at the No. 1 spot in two dual meets against ranked opponents this week on the road. At No. 17 Texas, the senior defeated Breaunna Addison before teaming up with Carol Zhao to defeat Addison and partner Pippa Horn, helping Stanford defeat the Longhorns, 6-1. At No. 22 Rice, Ahn pulled out a spectacular victory over Natalie Beazant with all three sets going to extra scores. The Upper Saddle River, N.J., native competed with Zhao against Beazant and Dominique Harmath at doubles to secure the win over Rice with a final score of 5-2. The Cardinal now has a 4-0 record on the year. 

This week, the Trojans’ men’s team heads to Stanford to take on the Cardinal in a Conference dual match-up on Friday, Feb. 7 at 1:30 p.m. PT. The Stanford women host Saint Mary’s (Calif.) in a dual meet the next day, Saturday, Feb. 8 beginning at 12 p.m. PT.
