Another action-packed season of Pac-12 softball opens this weekend with all nine league teams set to begin the 2014 slate. With six teams ranked in two separate polls and a dozen players named candidates for the most prestigious award in collegiate softball, the Conference is poised to continue its tradition of excellence on the diamond ... Six of the nine teams open the season at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., beginning on Thursday, Feb. 6. Participating in the competitive tournament will be No. 7 ARIZONA STATE, No. 8 OREGON, No. 20 STANFORD, No. 24 CALIFORNIA, OREGON STATE and UTAH. No. 13 UCLA begins at the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Classic in Hawai’i, while No. 3 WASHINGTON heads to Las Vegas to play in the SportCo Kick-Off Classic, and ARIZONA hosts a three-game series against Southern Mississippi ... Arizona State and Washington tied for first in the annual Pac-12 softball coaches’ poll, making it only the fourth time in poll history that two teams have shared the first-place spot ... Twelve Pac-12 softball players were named to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year watch list last week, making it the sixth-straight year that at least a dozen student-athletes from the Conference were selected.
