Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament bracket set

Mar 8, 2014

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.— Nine of the 12 seeds for the 2014 Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament were determined on a frenetic final day of the Pac-12 regular season. The bracket is now set with the Pac-12 regular season champion ARIZONA Wildcats (28-3 overall, 15-3 in Pac-12 play) entering the event as the No. 1 seed.

The Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament takes place Wednesday-Saturday, March 12-15, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. A limited supply of tickets for sessions 1-4 are available now pac-12.com/tickets.  Tickets for sessions 5 and 6 (semifinals and championship game) go on sale at 10 a.m. PT on Sunday.

While UCLA (23-8, 12-6) locked in the No. 2 seed earlier in the week with its win at Washington, it took six games on the final day, including two in overtime, to determine nine of the Tournament’s 12 seeds.

A logjam followed with five teams tied for third place with 10-8 league records  - ARIZONA STATE (21-10), CALIFORNIA (19-12), COLORADO (21-10), OREGON (22-8), and STANFORD (19-11).

Following the league’s multi-team tie-breaking procedure, Arizona State emerged as the No. 3 seed as it had the advantage with a 5-3 collective head-to-head record against the other tied teams.

With the Sun Devils seeded, the multi-team tie-breaking procedure was repeated with the remaining four teams. With a favorable 3-1 record against the other three teams, CALIFORNIA (19-12, 10-8) grabbed the coveted No. 4 seed and will receive a bye into Thursday’s quarterfinal.

The multi-team tie-breaking procedure was repeated once more with Colorado, Oregon and Stanford, where the Buffaloes (21-10, 10-8) were awarded the No. 5 seed after it sported a 2-0 record against the Ducks and Cardinal.

The two-team tie-breaking procedure was then implemented with Stanford and Oregon. The Cardinal held the head-to-head advantage over the Ducks, picking up the No. 6 seed. Oregon, riding a seven-game winning streak, was awarded the No. 7 seed.

UTAH (20-10) and WASHINGTON (17-14) finished in a tie for eighth with 9-9 league marks. With both teams splitting head-to-head meetings this season, the next step in the two-team tie-breaker was to compare each team’s records vs. the team occupying the highest position in the final regular regular season standings, and then continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage.

Both teams were winless against league champion Arizona. However, Utah grabbed the No. 8 seed with its 1-1 record against UCLA, while Washington was winless against the Bruins and pulled in the No. 9 seed. The two teams will tip off the Pac-12 Tournament Wednesday, March 12 at 12 noon on Pac-12 Networks.

OREGON STATE (16-14, 8-10) equalled its best league record over the last 21 seasons. The No. 10-seeded Beavers will face rival Oregon.

In the final Pac-12 game of the regular season, WASHINGTON STATE (10-20, 3-15) upended UCLA to grab the No. 11 seed, while USC (11-20, 2-16) rounds out the Pac-12 Tournament bracket with the No. 12 seed.
