Pac-12 announces tennis players of the week

Mar 18, 2014

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC juniors Roberto Quiroz and Zoë Scandalis were voted Pac-12 men’s and women’s tennis Players of the Week for play from Mar. 11-17, the Conference office announced today.

Quiroz (Guayaquil, Ecuador) had a winning doubleheader for the Trojans, capturing the singles clincher against No. 8 Notre Dame and then wrapping up a three-set win for a shutout of Hawai’i a few hours later. Against the Irish, Quiroz pushed the Trojans to a 4-0 lead on his 6-2, 6-3 win over Ryan Bandy at the No. 3 singles spot. In the next match against Hawai’i, Quiroz climbed to the No. 1 position and pulled out a tough three-set match against Jonathan Brooklyn with a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (10-7) decision to make a 6-0 final score for the Trojans. Quiroz now holds a six-match singles win streak, improving to 18-4 overall and 10-3 in dual-match singles play. USC is now 15-2 overall.

Scandalis (San Diego, Calif.) also had match-clinching victories in back-to-back matches for the Trojans last week, helping USC to a 2-0 start in Pac-12 play with road wins at Colorado and Utah. Playing at the No. 1 singles spot, the junior defeated Colorado’s Julyette Steur and Utah’s Tereza Bekerova. Both wins gave the Trojans their fourth point of each match to lock USC in for the win, sending them home with an 11-4 overall record and a 2-0 Pac-12 mark. Scandalis, ranked 25th nationally, improved her overall singles record to 14-6 with the road trip, and is now 10-2 in dual match singles play.

USC men’s tennis hits the road for a lengthy trip to face Alabama and Ole Miss, as well as a home match next Tuesday against San Diego State. The women’s team continues its Pac-12 road trip, traveling to play against Washington on Sunday, March 23.
