Ducks Wrap Up Day One at Pac-12s
OJAI, Calif. – Lina Åkesson was the lone Duck to advance onto the next round in the Pac-12 Tennis Championships, winning her singles match in the invitational flight on Thursday at the Ojai Athletic Club.
Playing in the second wave of singles matches of the day, Åkesson advanced to the round of 16 when she defeated Hendrikx Inge of Arizona in the invitational bracket. The Bunkeflostrand, Sweden, native needed three sets, but was able to come out on top with the 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 victory.
The freshman however wasn’t able to move past third-seeded Giuliana Olmos of USC in the round of 16, falling 6-0, 6-2.
In the championship flight, Nicole Long battled it out to the bitter end against Stanford’s Taylor Davidson. However, Davidson was able to edge out Long for the 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4. Long finishes the season 13-9 in singles play and 11-7 in dual play and will move on to the doubles draw.
Senior Lana Butter also fell in the championship flight. Buttner played close against Washington’s Julija Lukac, but fell 6-4, 7-6 (5) to eliminate Oregon from the singles championship.
Back in the invitational flight, Allie Hueffner dropped her singles rematch with Kostas Lindsey of Stanford 7-4, 6-4. Kadie Hueffner also lost in straight-sets to Maegan Manasse, the second-seeded player in the invitational flight, 6-0, 6-0. Maja Salibasic played in her first match since early February, losing to Washington’s Sophia Bott 6-2, 6-3.
Salibasic and the Hueffner sisters will now play in the consolation bracket while the doubles draw is set to begin on Friday, April 25.
