Apr 28, 2014

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA junior first baseman Hallie Wilson was voted Pac-12 Softball Player of the Week and ARIZONA STATE senior pitcher Mackenzie Popescue was voted Pac-12 Softball Pitcher of the Week for play from April 21-27, the Conference office announced today.

Wilson (Santa Ana, Calif.) hit five home runs and batted .533, helping Arizona to a perfect 5-0 record on the week, including taking both games of a doubleheader against New Mexico State and a three-game sweep of utah. The junior had two multi-homer games, posting a 1.600 slugging percentage and drew four walks, helping her accumulate a .600 on-base percentage. Wilson, the Pac-12 leader in runs scored, crossed the plate 11 times as the Arizona offense put up 52 runs in the five games. She drove in nine runs and doubled once on the week. On the season, Wilson is hitting .421 with 12 home runs and 51 runs batted in.

Popescue (Glendale, Ariz.) played a pivotal role in holding Southern Miss scoreless for an entire weekend, pitching two complete game shutouts with a no-hitter in the series opener. Popescue finished the weekend with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances, giving up just four walks and three total hits, all three of which came in the series finale where she matched a season high with seven strikeouts. The senior is now 20-1 on the season with the two victories.

It is the second-career honor for Wilson, who earned it for the first time earlier this season on March 11. It makes it Arizona’s 140th all-time, which leads the Conference. Popescue’s is the first weekly honor of her career, and the 83rd for Arizona State all-time.

Arizona heads to take on Washington in a three-game series beginning Friday, May 2. Arizona State also travels to the Pacific Northwest, facing Oregon in Eugene in a three-game series. The first two games of Arizona’s series will be televised on Pac-12 Networks, while the first and final games of Arizona State’s series will also be on Pac-12 Networks.
