2014 Windermere Cup One For The Books
SEATTLE -- The rain held off for the majority of the morning on Saturday for the 28th annual Windermere Cup that helps to officially open boating season in Seattle. Of the four headlining races, the men’s and women’s Erickson Cascade Cup and the men’s and women’s Windermere Cup, the Huskies would take home top honors in three of the four, only falling behind in the men’s Windermere Cup by two seconds to the world championship crew from Great Britain.
The women’s varsity 8+ had better luck against the visiting GB national team and would win by a four second margin. The entire race was a close contest between the two boats almost the entire way down the course but as they passed under the bridge the Huskies would start to pull into the lead. By the end the girls would finish in 6:27.9, a length ahead of the Brits (6:32.3).
“We really just wanted to keep up with them,” head women’s coach Bob Ernst said. “The kids did a really nice job at that. They were really disappointed in their race at California last weekend because they didn’t perform the way they knew they could, but that’s what you have the whole season for, to get ready for the end. Today certainly helped that.”
In the men’s Windermere Cup race, the men’s V8+ was also up against a stacked crew from across the pond. Though the Huskies had a couple of seats on the visiting boat for most of the race, in the final sprint GBR would pull out the victory in 5:54.0, with the Dawgs just behind at 5:56.0.
“I thought the guys had a really solid race. We had a goal of having a really strong beginning of the race,” head men’s coach Michael Callahan said. “I thought the first 1500m were outstanding and I think we were on the redline and we really stayed on the British guys. We had a couple of seats on them, but then going into the cut the Brits showed they had a couple more gears on them which is what you normally see in international rowing.”
UW also faced GBR last year at the Henley Royal Regatta when the Huskies matched the course record in the Grand Challenge Cup final, but would be bested by the Brits who set their own record. The two races against Great Britain are the only two races the UW V8+ has lost since 2010.
The Husky boats in both Cascade Cup races would each have dominating victories from the start. The UW 2V8+ women would beat out visiting Western Washington by almost a full 10 seconds, 6:45.4 to 6:53.6.
In the Men’s Cascade Cup, three Washington boats took on a crew from Oregon State. The three Husky boats would prove to be the toughest competition for each other, all finishing within 10 seconds of each other. The 2V8+ boat crossed in 5:53.6 followed just behind by the F8+ (5:54.5) and the 3V8+ (6:03.0).
For the freshmen races, the men’s 2F8+ and 3F8+ also battled two crews from OSU, but still came out on top in 6:01.0 and 6:04.3 respectively. The women’s freshman would take on a crew from University of Victoria and Seattle University. The undefeated top freshman boat would cross in 6:42.2 with an open water victory, the second freshman crew would finish in 7:02.0.
In the women’s open 8+ the two Husky boats would be barely edged out by the top Seattle U boat. The Redhawks finished in 7:20.3 followed by the UW crews in 7:22.6 and 7:28.3.
The UW dominance continued in both the 4+ races. The two women’s 4+s came in first and second in 7:36.9 and 7:40.9, respectively. The men’s four also crushed their race to finish in 6:54.31, 13 seconds ahead of the next boat in the race.
The Huskies will now have a weekend off to prepare for the Pac-12 Championships, which will happen in Gold River, Calif. on Sun. May 18.
