PULLMAN, Wash. - The Oregon State Women's Rowing team raced well on Saturday morning at Wawawai Landing, coming in a tie for first with Washington State in the Varsity 8 with a time of 7:18.88.

The Beavers earned their share of the Crawford Perpetual Plate (given to the winner of the V8 race), but so did the Cougars, as the crews crossed the finish line at the exact same time. To compensate, officials ruled the race a tie, so the teams will have to share the award until next time around.

"The V8 race was incredible," Oregon State head coach Emily Ford said. "Both boats did a great job of battling all the way down the course. In the end, it was too close to call. That was an exciting boat race!"

The Beavs' Novice 8 boat claimed victory over Washington State with a time of 7:47.6, finishing over 20 seconds ahead of the Cougars (8:09.3).

"The Novice 8 did a great job," Ford said. "They handled some pretty adverse conditions very well which I think ultimately helped them get the win."

Oregon State's Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 struggled, falling to Washington State in both races. The 3V8 claimed second place, with a time of 8:00.91, wedged between two WSU crews.

The weather conditions on Saturday morning were less than ideal, as the wind became a factor in each of the races. There were 10-12 mph quartering headwinds and 17 mph gusts that the crews had to face while racing.

"Overall it was a mixed bag for the team," Ford said. The next two weeks will be very important preparation time for us."

Oregon State will return to the water on May 18 at the Pac-12 Championships in Gold River, Calif.
