May 5, 2014

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. Incoming Arizona men’s basketball student-athlete Stanley Johnson is one of three international gold medalists headed to the 2014 USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team training camp from June 10-19, USA Basketball announced Monday.

The training camp will be used to select the 12-member team that will compete in the USA Basketball-hosted 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship from June 20-24. UA head coach Sean Miller will serve as an assistant coach for the 2014 Men’s U18 National Team.

Johnson is one of three high school seniors headed to the camp who each have two gold medals playing internationally for USA Basketball, alongside Tyus Jones and Justise Winslow. The trio teamed up to collect a gold medal at the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship, while Johnson and Jones earned gold at the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.

A McDonald’s All-American, the Gatorade California State Player of the Year and the only boys’ player in California history to win state titles in four-consecutive seasons at the upper-division level, Johnson was a member of the 2014 USA Junior National Select Team that defeated a World Select Team, 84-73, at the 2014 Nike Hoop Summit.

The 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship will feature eight national teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean, including: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, United States and Uruguay. The top four finishing teams will qualify for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship for Men. Players eligible for the competition must have been born on or after Jan. 1, 1996.
