Huskies Add Meyer-Whalley To The Mix

SEATTLE – Washington volleyball has added a fourth member to its freshman class for the upcoming season, as Los Angeles native Reni Meyer-Whalley has been admitted and will join the Huskies this fall.

A defensive specialist/libero who has also played extensively as a setter, Meyer-Whalley is one of the top prospects from Southern California, leading both her Marymount High School and Sunshine Volleyball Club teams to consistent success.

“We’re going to use her wherever we can benefit most from her talents and ability as a volleyball player,” said Head Coach Jim McLaughlin. “She’s a special person. She’s got the heart of a lion. She’s very competitive and very disciplined, and has the intangibles that you have to have at this level.”

Last season, Meyer-Whalley was named to the All-CIF 1AA First Team in California, a team that also included fellow Husky recruits Tia Scambray and Crissy Jones, who was named Co-Player of the Year. She was the team’s MVP, leading Marymount to the Sunshine League title and earning First Team All-League.

In 2012, Meyer-Whalley was the setter as the Marymount team won the CIF Division I championship, and she was named a Mizuno/Volleyball Magazine Third Team All-American. The previous year Marymount was the state runner-up to Palo Alto featuring current Husky Melanie Wade.

PrepVolleyball.com listed Meyer-Whalley in the 101-250 grouping in its annual Senior Aces list. She has also been a three-time MVP for her club team.

“The more I learned about her as a person, she understands commitment, and knows how to make good choices, and the thing that’s really neat about her is in the tightest moments she feels the most comfortable. She likes being in a tough situation and she responds to it from what I’ve seen thus far. I can’t wait to be in the gym with her and coach her. We expect her to make a huge contribution to this program.”
