Oregon's season stroke average breaks program record
CLE ELUM, Wash. -- The Oregon women's golf team shot its best round of the NCAA West Regional on Saturday and climbed three spots on the leaderboard, but finished short of advancing to the NCAA Championships. The No. 32 Ducks carded rounds of 311, 314 and 309 for a 54-hole total of 934 (+70) to place 14th at the Tumble Creek Club at the Suncadia Resort.
The Ducks advanced to NCAA Regionals for a seventh straight season and for the fifth time under head coach Ria Scott. UO was in pursuit of its 12th appearance at the NCAA Championship, but its season will come to an end after placing outside the top eight. Only five teams in the 24-team field had lower closing rounds than Oregon. The Ducks finished above 10 teams, including three ranked foes.
After competing in 13 tournaments, Oregon will close the 2013-14 season with a 298.6 round average, setting a new program record. UO's previous top round average came under Scott in 2010-11 with a 299.64 average. Additionally, junior Cassy Isagawa closed the season with a 72.95 round average - the third best in program history - and now owns the top three averages in UO's record books. Isagawa, freshman Cathleen Santoso and sophomore Caroline Inglis' round averages each rank in the top five in program history.
Inglis provided Oregon's top finish, tying for 22nd with rounds of 72, 79 and 75 for a three-round tally of 226 (+10). The Eugene native carded UO's lowest score in the first and third rounds. Today, Inglis chipped in for birdie on the par-five 14th and followed with a consecutive birdie on the par-five 15th. She made 12 pars on her round. Inglis competed in 12-of-13 tournaments this season with a 74 round average, which ranks fifth best in UO history.
Santoso, an honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection, placed 31st with a 54-hole score of 229 (+13). The Sydney, Australia, native carded steady rounds of 76, 75 and 78. In her closing round, Santoso carded a 39 on both sides and made 13 pars. Santoso closes the season with a 73.87 round average, which is the fourth best overall and the second-best round average by a freshman in program history.
Isagawa improved 13 spots individually and finished tied for 61st with a three-round score of 235 (79-78-78). The Wailuku, Hawaii, native was a second team All-Pac-12 selection this season, becoming the fourth player in UO history to collect three all-conference selections. In today's round, Isagawa birdied the par-five eighth hole and made 11 pars. Isagawa led the Ducks in stroke average, top 10 finishes and rounds at or below par this season.
Freshman Marcella Pranovia carded her best round of the tournament today and improved 10 spots on the leaderboard. After improving from each round to the next, the Bali, Indonesia, native tied for 101st place with a three-round tally of 244 (84-82-78). Pranovia eagled the par-five 15th hole and birdies holes No. 1 and 16. Pranovia closes the season with a 76.5 stroke average in her rookie campaign.
Senior Raphaela Dyer carded an 85 in today's closing round and finished with a three-round score of 260. The Swanmore, England, native played in 26 career tournaments for the Ducks, contributing to the team in every season. While they will be tasked with replacing Dyer, the Ducks will return seven players and five letterwinners next season, while welcoming two freshmen to the program.
Top-ranked USC won the NCAA West Regional with a three-round score of 876 (+12). Also qualifying out of the west will be Washington, Arizona State, Oklahaoma, Michigan State, Iowa State, Texas A&M and Northwestern. Of the three regionals, the west at Tumble Creek was the toughest with an overall round average of 78.4.
