Cal Sweeps Saturday Matches to Close Hawaii Trip

Jan 10, 2015
LAHAINA, Hawaii – California closed its run in the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational by winning all 10 of its matches on Saturday at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch on the island of Maui. The Golden Bears captured three doubles matches and seven singles matches in the University of Hawaii’s tournament.

In doubles, Cal’s fourth-ranked sophomore duo of Denise Starr and Maegan Manasse shut out Cindy Nguyen and Sarah Gealer, 6-0, the Bears’ team of senior Cecilia Estlander and freshman Lyann Hoang also blanked Daisy Green/Klara Pribylova, 6-0, and Cal’s pair of freshman Karla Popovic and sophomore Stephane Lin defeated Rebecca Faltusz/Martina Kostalova, 7-5.

Hoang and Starr got the Bears off to a good start in singles. The first-year Bear bageled Green in the first set before winning, 6-0, 6-3. The 64th-ranked Starr lost just two games in her 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kostalova. Popovic, ranked 30th, posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Pribylova, followed by 78th-ranked junior Klara Fabikova beating Hawaii’s Viktoria Malova, 7-5, 6-2, and 14th-ranked senior Zsofi Susanyi topping Gealer, 6-1, 6-3.

Ranked fifth in the nation, Manasse beat Nguyen, 6-3, 6-3, before Lin wrapped up the tournament for the Bears with a 6-1, 7-6(8) win over Faltusz.

“It was a good start for the spring season for us,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “It was good for us to get three days of match play in. It’s also nice because we haven’t started classes just yet so it’s an opportunity for us to get a little bit of practice and get the team back together and on the court for match play. It was great. We’ve very competitive tennis here. It was great to get our doubles teams back together and see where everyone’s at and move the team along.

“Yesterday we had four three setters and were successful in all four of them, so that was a really good thing. We’ll try to keep on track with that. We’ve got a ways to go. With a couple tournaments this week and next–our Cal Winter Invitational – we’re building up to the ITA Kickoff Weekend. Zack [Warren, Cal’s assistant coach] and I were pleased with what we saw this weekend.”

Cal returns to action when it hosts the Cal Winter Invitational from Jan. 16-18 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
