Jon Rahm to play in Waste Management Open

Jan 14, 2015

Junior Jon Rahm of @ASUMensGolf, currently ranked third in the World Amateur Rankings, received the second of five available sponsor exemptions for the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open, Tournament Chairman Danny Calihan announced. Rahm will play in the upcoming PGA TOUR tournament which is scheduled to be played January 26 – February 1 at TPC Scottsdale.

The native of Barrika,Spain, had an outstanding 2013-14 season as a sophomore for the Sun Devils as he began the year with a victory in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. He helped Europe win the Palmer Cup, compiling three-and-a-half points out of four. He then won the Spanish Amateur Championship before representing Spain in the World Amateur Team Championship, where he was the individual winner, breaking the 72-hole record Jack Nicklaus set in 1960, and opened the 2014-15 college season by winning the Bill Cullum Invitational.

Following his sophomore season, Rahm was a first-team All-Pac-12 pick and an Honorable Mention All-American. After his freshman season, he was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, was a second-team All-Pac-12 selection and an Honorable Mention All-American. At the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, he shot an opening-round record 61.

Entering the spring of 2015, Rahm has a 70.87 stroke average in 31 career events and 40 rounds in the 60s. He has posted par or better in 57 of 95 career rounds. He already has 22 eagles in 83 career rounds.

Calihan and The Thunderbirds have a total of five exemptions to handout for the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open. The first exemption was given to Ireland’s Padraig Harrington. The remaining three exemptions will be announced in the coming weeks leading up to the tournament.

So far in 2014-15, Rahm has won the individual title at the Bull Cullum Invite in October shooting a 13-under 203 (67-67-69), breaking the tournament record that he set when he won the title in 2012 with a 204. He also had a top-five finish earlier this month at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational when he carded 15 birdies and two eagles in the tournament, finishing at 15-under 201 (67-67-67).
