Jan 22, 2015

STANFORD, Calif. – No. 2 Stanford men’s gymnast Akash Modi was named the College Gymnastics Association Gymnast of the Week for the second consecutive week, as announced by the organization Thursday.

Modi claimed individual victories in five events, including the all-around (89.300), parallel bars (15.800), rings (15.050), high bar (14.950) and pommel horse (14.550). His score on rings was 0.1 off from his career best, while his score on parallel bars was just 0.05 from matching his career high.

Modi’s standout performance helped lead Stanford to a 435.550-427.900 victory against California. It was the second win in as many weeks for the Cardinal against the Golden Bears.

Modi earned national recognition last week as well after claiming individual victories in the all-around and floor to lead Stanford to a season-opening victory at California. He went 87.800 in the all-around and 15.150 on floor to place first, and scored 14.400 on pommel horse to tie for second. In an exhibition routine, Modi scored a meet-best 15.300 on parallel bars.

Modi was a four-time CGA Gymnast of the Week as a freshman in 2014.

Stanford and Modi will look to keep their momentum going this Saturday at 4 p.m. (PT) when it plays host to No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 6 California and No. 10 Nebraska.
