Cats Drop Dual Meet to Stanford

TUCSON, Ariz. The Arizona men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell Friday to Stanford at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center. Arizona’s 11th-ranked men fell to Stanford’s No. 7 team, 160-101 while the 14th-ranked UA women dropped a 145-111 decision to Stanford’s third-ranked squad. It was the women’s first loss of the season.

On the women’s side, UA earned five victories, including by Bonnie Brandon. The junior on the 200 back with a time of 1:56.04 and the 500 free at 4:52.96. Brandon also finished second in the 200 free.

Tjasa Oder won the first individual event of the day when she swam the 1000 free in 9:54.67 to earn a 22.21 second victory in the event. Oder also finished second to Brandon in the 500 free.

Shannyn Hultin edged teammate Cameron McHugh for the 200 IM title. Hultin took the top spot with a time of 2:07.41.

UA closed the meet strong, with the team of Taylor Schick, Paige Kremer, Elizabeth Pepper and Katja Hajdinjak winning the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:24.32.

The men’s team got the day going with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The team of Michael Meyer, Kevin Cordes, Brian Stevens and Brad Tandy swam the relay in 1:29.01 to earn the victory by four tenths of a second.

UA also took the first individual event of the day when Nick Hogsed won the 1000 free (9:20.46). Hogsed later finished third in the 500 free.

Kevin Cordes won his two events, taking first in the 100 breast (54.26) and 200 breast (1:59.16).

Brad Tandy edged out Stanford’s David Nolan by one one-hundredth of a second to win the 50 free. Tandy swam the event in 20.11 to win by a hair.

The Cats welcome Cal to Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on Saturday with the meet beginning at 11:20 a.m. MST. The meet will be shown on the Pac-12 Networks beginning at noon.
