Pac-12 announces tennis players of the week

SAN FRANCISCO - UTAH sophomore Parker McGuiness and CALIFORNIA sophomore Denise Starr were named the Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week for play from Mar. 2-8, the Conference office announced today.

McGuiness (McKinney, Texas) picked up his eighth overall singles win this past week with a straight-set win over Andrey Goryachkov of BYU on court No. 2. The sophomore transfer posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Goryachkov to improve his record to 8-3 on the year. He has now held the best dual-match singles record on the Utes for three-straight weeks. 

Starr (Brooklyn, N.Y.) clinched No. 7 Cal’s 7-0 wins over Pac-12 opponents Colorado and Utah on the Golden Bears’ home court. Against the Buffaloes, the sophomore defeated Nuria Ormeno Ruiz, 6-1, 6-2, at court No. 3 to secure the win. Against the Utes, Starr beat Luisa Gerstner Da Rose, 6-1, 6-3, on court No. 3 to clinch. Starr paired with Maegan Manasse to pick up doubles wins on court one in both matches. 

It marks the first-career weekly selections for both McGuiness and Starr. Utah now holds four men’s weekly honors all-time, while California picks up its 28th all-time weekly honor. 

The Utah men continue non-conference play this week with one dual, hosting New Mexico on Friday, Mar. 13. The California women take a break from Pac-12 play and travel to play at San Diego State on Friday, Mar. 13 and at Pepperdine on Saturday, Mar. 14.
