Buffs Travel East To Battle No. 2 Boston College

BOULDER - The University of Colorado lacrosse team travels to Newton, Mass. on Wednesday, March 25 to face No. 2 Boston College in its second match of a three-game road trip. First draw is set for 2 p.m. MT.

The Buffaloes (4-2) are coming off a double-overtime thriller against Michigan on Sunday (March 22) where they rallied from five goals down to defeat the Wolverines 14-13 in sudden-victory and earned their first road win of the season.

Wednesday's game will mark the first meeting between the Buffs and Eagles. Colorado will look for its third-straight win and first victory over a ranked opponent in program history.

Boston College enters the contest with a perfect 9-0 record and is led by senior attacker Covie Stanwick, who ranks 12th in the nation in scoring with 27 goals.

COLORADO VS. BOSTON COLLEGE: Wednesday's game will mark the first meeting between the Buffs and Eagles.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES: Boston College enters the game with a perfect 9-0 record and moved up one spot to No. 2 in the country in the latest IWLCA poll after defeating then second-ranked North Carolina 10-9 in overtime its last time out on March 21.  Senior attacker Covie Stanwick ranks 12th nationally in scoring and leads the Eagles' offense with 37 points on 27 goals and 10 assists. Three of her fellow teammates- Caroline Margolis, Sarah Mannelly and Mikaela Rix each have recorded 20+ goals this season. Goalkeeper Zoe Ochoa has earned all nine wins for BC with a 7.42 goals-against average. Ochoa has recorded 54 saves with a .458 save percentage and she is also fourth on the team with 13 ground balls.

LAST TIME OUT: The Buffs erased a five-goal deficit late in the second half against Michigan on Sunday, rallying to defeat the Wolverines 14-13 in double-overtime. Colorado scored six goals in just over seven minutes to tie the game. CU was led by freshman Darby Kiernan who scored a team and career-high five goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime. Freshman midfielder Blair Sisk also stepped up, recording her second career hat trick and tallied the game-tying goal with 20 seconds left. With the comeback, the Buffs earned their first road win of the season.

PROGRAM FIRSTS: In the Buffaloes' game against Presbyterian on March 2, CU turned in a record setting performance for the black and gold, posting the largest margin of victory (19), allowed the fewest number of goals (0), shots (5), assists (0) and points (0) by an opponent and tallied their first shutout in program history. The Buffs also recorded the second most points in a single-game (25) and tied a program record with 19 goals.

HATRICKS ALL AROUND: Five Buffaloes have recorded hat tricks this season. Johnna Fusco and Kiernan lead the pack with four in six games. Freshman Blair Sisk follows with two, and sophomore Cali Castagnola along with freshmen Taylor Oliver each have one.

FEARLESS FRESHMEN: In their first collegiate season playing for the black and gold, Kiernan and Sisk have made an immediate impact, each contributing in a variety of ways for the Buffs. Kiernan has started all six games and is second on the team with 15 goals and 15 ground balls. She already has four hat tricks this season and has one five-goal game in her pocket (at Michigan on March 22). Sisk also continues to develop in her role on the attack. The midfielder from Greenwood Village, Colo. has started five of six games and joins Fusco and Kiernan as one of only three Buffs in double-digit scoring. Sisk ranks third on the team with 11 goals. She also boasts an impressive .875 SOG percentage, as 21 of her 24 shots have been put on frame.

FIERCE FUSCO: Sophomore Johnna Fusco continues to be a main contributor on the attack each week. She leads the Buffaloes in goals (17), points (19), shots (37), shots on goal (29) and is 8-14 on free position shots. She also is second in assists (2) and is second in draw controls (13). The attacker has recorded a hat trick in four of six games. She ranks fourth in the MPSF in goals per game (2.83 average) and third in shots per game, averaging 6.17 in each contest.

MULTI-GOAL PERFORMANCES: Seven different Buffs have recorded at least one multi-goal game in 2015. Fusco and Kiernan have five, Sisk has four, Castagnola and Macleay with two, and Taylor Oliver and Tori Link have one multi-goal performance a piece.

NEW COMPETITION: Colorado has six first-time opponents on its schedule this year: Marquette, Presbyterian, Northwestern, Michigan, Boston College and UMass Lowell The Buffs are 3-1 thus far against them, with wins against Marquette. Michigan and Presbyterian.

MPSF HONORS: Three Buffaloes swept the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week honors this week for their standout performances, March 16-22. Kiernan was awarded Offensive Player of the Week, goalkeeper Paige Soenksen won Defensive Player of the Week and Sisk earned Rookie of the Week honors. Each played a critical role in helping CU earn back-to-back victories over New Hampshire and Michigan.

NEXT UP: Colorado wraps up its road trip and non-conference schedule on Friday, March 27 with its second straight game on the east coast. The Buffs battle UMass Lowell beginning at 12 p.m. MT.
