Cats Dominate in First Day of Tulane Pelican Classic

NEW ORLEANS, La., – The No. 7 ranked Arizona Sand Volleyball team downed Spring Hill College and No. 8 Georgia State in the first day of the Tulane Pelican Classic in New Orleans, Louisiana. UA defeated Spring Hill College, 5-0 and earned a victory against the No. 8 team, Georgia State, 3-2. The Sand Cats closed out the day now holding a 12-3 record.

Arizona opened up the tournament ready to compete as they took on Spring Hill College. Arizona's No. 1 tandem of Madison and Mckenna Witt owned court one as they dominated against Julie Vujnovich and Madison Seuzeneau (21-10, 21-6).

The Wildcats duo of Jianna Bonomi and Katarina Schulz also picked up a win as they defeated The Badgers pair of Anna Tietjens and Dorina Klinger in consecutive sets, (21-12, 21-12).

Meanwhile on court three, UA's No. 3 pair of Olivia Macdonald and Samantha Manley snatched a win against Molly Griffin and Hannah Masoner of Spring Hill's No. 3 team, (21-16, 21-16).

Tyler Lucas and Kalei Mau, who are competing as Arizonas No. 4 team for this weekend of play earned a victory against Virginia Hicks and Catherine Milwee, (21-16, 21-17).

MacKenzie Kleespies and Hailey Devlin, UA's No. 5 team also picked up a win against The Badgers No. 5 duo of Emily Greim and Katie Beth Gammons, (21-10, 21-8).

Arizona would then go on to hit the sand against No. 8 Georgia State to close out the day of play.

At the No. 2 position Jianna Bonomi and Katarina Schulz earned a victory against Nina Interwies and Katelyn Rawls on court two, (21-16, 21-16).

The Panthers duo of Milani Pickering and Delaney Rohan would then go on to pick up a win against The Wildcats' No. 3 pair of Olivia Macdonald and Sam Manley, (21-16, 21-16).

UA's No. 5 team of Hailey Devlin and MacKenzie Kleespies owned the court as they defeated Georgia State duo of Jessica Fourspring and Alexis Townsend, (21-19, 21-8).

The Wildcats No. 4 duo of Tyler Lucas and Kalei Mau fell to The Panthers tandem of Brooke Weiner and Alexis Elmurr, (21-19, 21-16).   

Meanwhile, the No. 1 team of Madison and McKenna Witt dominated court one as they earned a victory against Georgia State's Sara Olivova and Jansen Button, (21-17, 21-12).

Tomorrow, UA concludes their weekend of play at the Tulane Pelican Classic, as they take on LSU at 10:20 a.m. in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Wildcats earned a victory against LSU at the Arizona Invitational, (4-1) in the 2014-15 season. The Tigers hold a record of, (9-4).
