Jun 28, 2016

BEIJING, China – The Pac-12 All-Star volleyball team put up an impressive performance in their first match in Beijing. The team tallied a convincing 3-0 win over Bayi Army professional team (25-18, 27-25, 25-23).

The team was led by junior Adora Anae of Utah with 13 kills, followed by teammate Washington’s Destiny Julye with 8 total kills.

In front of a crowd of 200 fans, the all-star team jumped up to a quick six-point lead in the first set. Their opening efforts were fueled by an ace from Sumeet Gill of Oregon followed by a pair of forced errors by Bayi Army.

After a timeout with Pac-12 in the lead 18-15, Adora Anae took over with a floater over Bayi’s front line, followed by a spike down their sideline. The Pac-12 went on to win the first set 25-18.

The two teams traded points back and forth in the second set. The set saw nine different tied scores, but after a block from Gill and a resounding spike by Anae, the all-star volleyball team won their second match 27-25.

In the third and final set, the Pac-12 athletes could not be stopped. Anae tied the game at 20 with a spike that ricocheted off of two Bayi players. With visible improvement on their communication and team cohesiveness, the Pac-12 came away with the win, 25-23.

Gill, Jenelle Jordan of California, Gabby Simpson of Colorado, and Kalei Mau of Arizona each finished with five kills to round out the Pac-12’s scoring.

Next up for the Pac-12 all-star team is a match against the Chinese Junior National team on Wednesday, June 29 at 7PM, Beijing time.

The tour is another milestone for Pac-12 Global, an initiative to promote goodwill and transformative life experiences through student-athlete exchanges and sport, and to showcase the Conference and its member institutions in China. Student-athlete tours have been organized in the sports of men’s and women’s basketball, as well as women’s volleyball. Coaching clinics have also been organized with Pac-12 coaches sharing their knowledge of sport with Chinese groups both abroad in China and at member campuses, as well as hosting exhibition games with some of China’s top teams in women’s volleyball and women’s soccer. This past November, the Conference hosted the Pac-12 China Game in Shanghai, becoming the first ever league - college or professional - to host a regular season basketball game in China.
