TUCSON, Ariz. – Paced by individual co-leaders Lilia Vu and Bethany Wu, UCLA owns the lead after Monday’s opening 18 holes of the 2017 Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championships hosted by the University of Arizona at Sewailo Golf Club.

Vu and Wu each fired 1-under-par rounds of 71 to help the No. 6 nationally ranked Bruins set the early tone with a team total of 2-over 290 on the par-72, 6,583-yard Sewailo layout.

No. 3 ranked STANFORD and COLORADO are each six shots off the pace in second place at 8-over 296, while No. 10 USC (304, +16) and No. 14 ARIZONA (305, +17) round out the top five on the team leaderboard. ARIZONA STATE, which took over as Golfweek’s No. 1 nationally ranked team on Monday, is just outside the top five at 307 (+19).

UCLA took advantage of its early tee time, racing out to 8-under including a front nine 4-under 32 from Wu, before the Sewailo winds picked up with gusts near 30 mph and brought the Bruins back to the field.

ANNIKA Award candidate Andrea Lee of Stanford and Colorado’s Robyn Choi paced their teams with even-par rounds of 72, while Mariel Galdiano carded a 1-over 73 to give UCLA three players in the individual top 5 after Day 1. Eight players are tied for sixth at 2-over 74.

Tuesday play begins off both the 1st and 10th tees beginning at 8 a.m., with similar wind speeds forecasted for the second round. Lighter winds are anticipated for Wednesday’s final round.

TV coverage of the event will debut in a one-hour special on Tuesday, May 2 at 4:30 p.m. PT/5:30 p.m. MT on Pac-12 Network.
