LOS ANGELES - The USC Trojans upset top-seeded and top-ranked UCLA for the second time in two days, winning the championship dual, 3-2, on Saturday to reclaim the Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championship title at Norman Merle Stadium on its own campus. It marks the third time in the four-year history of the championship the Trojans have claimed the crown.

The second-ranked team in the country, the Trojans went 4-0 over the three days of the championship to claim the league trophy. USC also won the Pac-12 title in 2016 and 2017, winning on its home court in the first year of the event. It was the third-straight year USC and UCLA met in the championship dual for the crown. Six of the last seven meetings between the teams in the Pac-12 Championship, 3-2, with the Trojans taking a 4-3 lead in the championship series.

UCLA took a 2-0 lead after claiming points at the No. 4 and No. 5 courts. The Bruins’ No. 4 pair of Lea Monkhouse and Savvy Simo battled to the wire in both sets against USC’s Joy Dennis and Maja Kaiser, 23-21, 26-24. The Trojans responded with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to even the dual score as the No. 2 pairs of Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil of UCLA and Terese Cannon and Sammy Slater of USC were headed into the third set tied at 1-1. UCLA went up 10-7 in that final frame, but USC responded with an 8-2 run to win the set, match, dual and title, 15-12.

The day opened with the Bruins taking a decisive 3-0 decision over California in the contender’s bracket final to get into the championship final. With the matches being played to decision all week, Carey/Sparks at No. 4 and Monkhouse/Simo at No. 5 gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead. UCLA’s top pair of Megan and Nicole McNamara closed out with a commanding 21-9, 21-13 win to post the team’s third point and win.

At the conclusion of the championship, six pairs were named to the Pac-12 Championship All-Tournament team: Grace Campbell/Iya Lindahl, CAL; Samantha Plaster/Kate Baldwin, ASU; Izzy Carey/Lindsey Sparks, UCLA; Sarah Sponcil/Lily Justine, UCLA; Tina Graudina/Abril Bustamante, USC; Sammy Slater/Terese Cannon, USC.

Pac-12 teams wait for the NCAA selections which will be announced tomorrow, Sunday, April 28 at 4 p.m. PT/7 p.m. PT on ncaa.com. The 2019 NCAA Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship will be held at Gulf Shores Public Beach in Gulf Shores, Ala., May 3-5.
