Bears Earn AVCA Team Academic Award

Jul 20, 2020

California volleyball garnered another academic award for the 2019-20 season on Monday, this time from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The Golden Bears were one of 1,313 teams across all of volleyball to be honored, and one of 46 Division I to earn the 2020 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award.

The Bears were one of eight Pac-12 schools to earn the distinction from the AVCA. It's the third time Cal has earned the AVCA Team Academic Award, and first since being recognized two straight years in 2011 and 2012.

In order for a team to earn the 2020 USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award, the entire team must achieve a minimum team cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 (on a 4.00 scale), a 4.10 (on a 5.00 scale) during the 2019-20 academic year. California tallied a 3.35 team GPA during the 2019-20 season, including a 3.47 mark this past spring.

Cal had eight student-athletes earn Pac-12 Fall Academic Honor Roll recognition in 2019-20, including juniors Mima Mirkovic and Isabel Potter, who received CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District distinction.
