BERKELEY – Cal men's tennis player Jacob Brumm and Golden Bear alumnus Billy Griffith will compete in the Oracle ITA Masters by UTR tournament that starts Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

Brumm, initially the tournament's first alternate, entered into the draw due to a withdrawal on Thursday, joining Griffith, his former teammate, in the 32-player field.

The singles-only tournament concludes Sunday, with Sunday's final broadcast on ESPNU and streamed on ESPN3. The men's final will start upon the conclusion of the 2 p.m. women's final or at 4 p.m. The tournament includes talented players from the college, junior and professional levels.

The champion of the tournament automatically qualifies for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships scheduled for Nov. 5-8 at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Florida.

Both Bears play their opening-round matches at 10 a.m. in San Diego, with Brumm facing Karl Poling and Griffith, the sixth seed, taking on Kyle Seelig. If both Bears should win, they would face each other in the round of 16 at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Brumm, a product of Rancho Santa Fe, posted a 6-3 singles record in the shortened 2019-20 season. Griffith, who hails from Fresno, completed his Cal career in the 2017-18 season, finishing his senior year with a final ranking of No. 41 in the Oracle ITA singles poll.
