The 2020 European Rowing Championships get underway Friday morning on Malta Lake in Poznan, Poland, with eight current and former Washington rowers ready to compete for their countries.
While the world rowing calendar – most notably the Olympic Games – for 2020 was mostly postponed cancelled due to the pandemic, the European Championships have been given the go ahead.
Washington will have four men and four women competing for five different nations. Four UW women, who all rowed in at least one NCAA champion crew, will see action in Poznan, led by three Italians: Carmela Pappalardo '20 in the pair, Chiara Ondoli '18 in the four and Valentina Iseppi '20 in the quad. They're joined by Tabea Schendekehl '20, who will stroke the German women's eight.
For the men, veterans Viktor Pivac '18 of Serbia and Ivan Piton '17 of Croatia will compete, in the pair and the four, respectively. Two Huskies are in the Netherlands men's eight: Simon van Dorp '20 and Bram Schwarz '20.
All of the action starts early Friday. See below for the full schedule and follow along at WorldRowing.com.
