Leger-Walker's Historic Debut Weekend Earns Pac-12 Freshman of the Week

Dec 14, 2020

SAN FRANCISCO – Charlisse Leger-Walker's stellar Washington State women's basketball debut over this past weekend has earned the first-year guard Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week honors for the week of Dec. 7-13, as announced by the Conference Monday, Dec. 14.

Leger-Walker filled up the stat sheet in her first weekend in a Washington State uniform, as she helped the Cougars pick up a pair of victories over rivals Washington and Idaho. The 5-10 guard averaged a Pac-12-best 24.5 points per game this past week, and tallied 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.5 steals in her first two games as a Coug.

The Waikato, New Zealand native opened her Washington State career with a 20-point, seven-rebound performance in a 60-52 win at Washington this past Friday, Dec. 11. Leger-Walker bested that effort just two days later by scoring a career-best 29 points and pulling down a career-high eight rebounds in WSU's 74-55 home-opening win over Idaho.

Leger-Walker scored a combined 24 points in the third and fourth quarter of Sunday's win over Idaho, 18 of which came in the third stanza. The 24-point second-half performance is the third-most points scored by a WSU player over the final 20 minutes of play, while her 18-point third quarter ties her with Chanelle Molina – 18 pts in the fourth quarter vs. UCLA on Jan. 6, 2017 - for the third-most points scored in any quarter by a WSU player.

The guard also made a little bit of WSU history over the weekend, as Leger-Walker is the only Washington State player to begin her career with back-to-back 20-point performances. Her combined 49 points is the most scored by a WSU player in their first two games in program history.

With Monday's announcement, Leger-Walker becomes the first player in Washington State history to earn the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week award in their debut week. It is also the first time a WSU player has earned the honor since Chanelle Molina won twice during the 2016-17 season. Leger-Walker is just the fourth player in program history to be named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, joining Molina and Lia Galdeira who garnered the accolade twice during their rookie campaign, and Borislava Hristova, who won three times in 2015-16.

Washington State will be back in action this Saturday, Dec. 19, as the Cougars leap back into conference action and play host to No. 21-ranked Oregon State. Tip-off from Beasley Coliseum is set for 12 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Network.
