Card Downs Cats in Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Oscar da Silva scored 21 points and Stanford beat Arizona 78-75 on Saturday night at Kaiser Permanente Arena to snap a 20-game losing streak against the Wildcats.
 
The Cardinal (4-2, 1-0 Pac-12) beat Arizona for the first time since Jan. 4, 2009, snapping the nation's fourth-longest active losing streak against a conference opponent.
 
Ziaire Williams scored 16 points with four assists, including a 3-for-5 mark from beyond the arc, while Bryce Wills added 13 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Daejon Davis tallied 11 points and seven assists, moving one point away from joining the program's 1,000-point club.
 
Jemarl Baker Jr. sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a layup by Lee in an 8-0 spurt that gave Arizona its first lead of the game at 69-68 with 3:33 to play. After da Silva answered with two free throws, Baker hit another 3. But Spencer Jones made two 3-pointers 37 seconds apart to make it 76-72 with 2:03 left and Stanford led the rest of the way. Jones finished 3-for-4 from deep on the night.
 
Baker hit a career-high eight 3-pointers and finished with 29 points for Arizona (5-1, 0-1).
 
The game was played at the home of the Golden State Warriors' G-League team, the Santa Cruz Warriors, due to health restrictions in Santa Clara County with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Baker made his final 3 to pull Arizona within a point with 1:38 left. After the teams combined for three consecutive empty possessions, Stanford freshman Ziaire Williams took a charge with 6.5 seconds left and da Silva made two free throws to cap the scoring.
 
The Wildcats, who made just 8 of 28 (29%) from the field in the first half, shot 69% (18 of 26) after halftime.
 
Stanford remains in Santa Cruz, where it will host CSU Bakersfield on Monday at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The 6 p.m. tilt will air on Pac-12 Networks.
