No. 2 UCLA Tops Texas A&M, 4-0, to Reach Indoors
LOS ANGELES – The No. 2 UCLA women's tennis team blanked Texas A&M Monday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center, earning a spot in the field at next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Stillwater, Okla.
Singles wins came from Bruins on Courts 1, 2 and 6 for the second day in a row, with Annette Goulak joining Abbey Forbes and Elysia Bolton this time around. Vanessa Ong clinched Sunday's win over No. 19 California. UCLA (2-0) again picked up the doubles point without a loss. Texas A&M suffered its first loss of the season, dropping to 3-1.
In doubles play, Goulak and Vivian Wolff raced out to a 5-0 advantage and closed out Renee McBryde and Katya Townsend for a 6-1 decision on Court 2. In a top-40 matchup on the top court, No. 1 Bolton and Jada Hart took care of business against No. 39 Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova, 6-2, securing the first point of the match. Goulak/Wolff and Bolton/Hart also earned wins Sunday to help the Bruins collect the doubles point.
On the top singles court, No. 7 Abbey Forbes defeated her second nationally-ranked opponent in as many days – and did so with ease. The sophomore dealt No. 64 Tatiana Makarova a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to increase the UCLA lead to 2-0.
Goulak closed out Jessica Anzo soon thereafter on Court 6. Making her 2021 singles debut, Goulak followed up her strong early-season doubles performances with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to put the Bruins one win away from the indoor tournament.
No. 9 Bolton, who put UCLA on the brink Sunday, closed it down Monday. Her second 6-2, 6-3 of the event came against Goldsmith on Court 2. Bolton's forehand return of Goldsmith's serve was too strong, causing the Aggie to push her counter wide.
ITA Indoors are slated for Feb. 5-7 at the Greenwood Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma State.
