Murphy Earns Pac-12 Defensive Honor

Jan 26, 2021

SAN FRANCISCO – Oregon libero Georgia Murphy earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors Tuesday after finishing the opening weekend at Washington State with a career-high 29 digs.

The sophomore was all over the floor in the Ducks' five-set win over the Cougars on Sunday, as her 29 digs are the most in a match by an Oregon player since Brooke Nuneviller had 30 against Colorado in November 2018. Murphy delivered with some clutch back-row play in crunch time, recording six digs in the fifth set of Sunday's match alone.

After one weekend of play, Murphy leads the Pac-12 in total digs with 41 and is fourth in digs per set with 4.56. Her 29 digs against Washington State on Sunday are also tied for the most in a match by player in the conference on opening weekend. She also recorded 12 digs in the season opener on Friday against the Cougars.

Murphy started at libero last year as a true freshman and was second on the team and 12th in the conference with 3.26 digs per set. The native of The Woodlands, Texas, was also 11th in the league with 368 total digs and now has three career performances of 20-plus digs after having two last season.
