OSU Tops USC for First Win of Season

Jan 29, 2021

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team earned its first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over USC on Friday night inside Gill Coliseum.

The win marks the first for the program over the Women of Troy since 2008.

After USC took the first set 25-18, the Beavers swept the next three with scores of 25-22, 26-24, and 25-12.

Both teams traded points early as the teams were tied at 8-8 after the first 16 points. The teams continued to go back and forth until USC went on a 3-0 run to make it a 16-13 game in its favor and force an Oregon State timeout. The Women of Troy never looked back in the set, going on to open the match with the 25-18 victory.

The Beavers responded in a close set two that saw seven ties and four lead changes. Following a kill by Lindsey Schell to open the set, USC went on a 3-0 run to take an early 3-1 lead. A service error by USC ignited a 5-0 OSU run as they claimed a 6-3 advantage.

Oregon State jumped in front 14-9, but the Women of Troy made it a one-point game, 14-13, to force OSU to call a timeout. Three of the ties came late in the set as The Beavers took a 22-21 lead, holding on to tie the match at one set a piece.

USC took the opening point of set three, its only lead of the set, as Oregon State grabbed an early 4-3 advantage not too long after. Once again, the teams found themselves battling back and forth in the early going. Despite the Women of Troy tying the set twice in the first 16 points, OSU never let them out in front.

An Izzi Szulczewski kill put the Beavers ahead 12-9, while an Aliyah McDonald and Anastasija Svetnik block extended the lead to 14-10 and made USC take a timeout.

OSU fought off the attack from the Women of Troy until they eventually tied the game at 22-22 and again at 24-24. Back-to-Back kills from senior Maddie Goings sealed the set for the Beavers.

It was all Oregon State in set four after two early ties. Following USC drawing the game even at 2-2, OSU recaptured the lead and went on to claim the match in dominating fashion, 25-12.
