Jan 30, 2021

Box Score | Oregon 7, BYU 0

EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon men's tennis team capped its season-opening weekend with a 7-0 sweep of BYU at the UO Student Tennis Center. The Ducks did not drop a set Saturday and moved to 2-0 on the young season.

"That was a clean effort from our guys," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "I thought yesterday was good but today was about as clean of a match that I've seen in a while. I liked our effort all weekend against a good BYU team."

Oregon jumped out to the early match lead with win at No. 2 (6-2) and 3 (6-3) doubles to clinch the 1-0 advantage. The home team made it 3-for-3 in doubles with a 7-6(6) victory at the top spot in the lineup. The team of Joshua Charlton and Brandon Lam trailed 4-0 in the tiebreaker before rallying.

Charlton, playing at No. 2 singles, was the first UO player off the court when his opponent retired in the second set. Charlton led 6-1, 2-1 at the time the match was stopped. Quinn Vandecasteele recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles to push the Ducks' lead to 3-0 over BYU (2-2). He and brother Luke teamed up for a doubles win earlier in the day.

Jesper Klov-Nilsson sealed the team victory with a straight-set win at No. 5 singles. The UO sophomore did not drop a set in two singles matches over the weekend.

"It feels so nice to be back playing," Klov-Nilsson said following the match. "I've been waiting for this fall season so it feels amazing to be with the boys competing.

"Without fans, we really have to help each other out with the energy but this weekend we were really good with that. We've got a good group of guys cheering for each other so it didn't feel as weird."

With the team victory in hand, the Ducks completed the sweep with wins from No. 76 Emmanuel Coste at No. 1, Brandon Lam at No. 4 and freshman Ryoma Matsushita at No. 6 singles. Matsushita's 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Dominik Jakovljevic was the first win of his UO career.
