Sun Devils Come Up Short Against #4 Longhorns

AUSTIN - The Sun Devils (1-1) showed they could compete with anyone Sunday in a close 4-3 road loss to No. 4 Texas (5-1) in Austin, Texas. Senior Nathan Ponwith had another strong performance, winning his doubles match 6-3 alongside freshman Max McKennon on court two as well as coming back to defeat No. 57 Siem Woldeab of Texas 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 on court two.
 
Doubles
No. 14 Ruehl/Bolla were the first to handle business in doubles play, sweeping Woldeab/Spizziri of Texas on court one. After Hoffmann/Rakotomalala lost their match on court three, Ponwith/McKennon's 6-3 victory on court two gave the Sun Devils the doubles point.
 
Singles
Texas came out hot in singles play, cruising to a 4-1 victory following wins on courts five, three, two and four. ASU earned its second point thanks to a two-set victory from sophomore George Stoupe at No. 6 where, after opening the match with a comfortable 6-4 victory in set one, Stoupe loss a bit of ground before rallying to close his match with a 7-6 second frame. The final point of the day came from Ponwith's three-set win at No. 1.

The Sun Devils come back to Tempe to host cross-town opponent Grand Canyon on Feb. 3. In-person fan attendance is still prohibited at this time.
