OSU Falls 3-1 to No. 11 Washington
SEATTLE, Wash. – The Oregon State volleyball team fell, 3-1, to 11th-ranked Washington on Friday night in Alaska Airlines Arena.
Washington opened the match with 25-17 and 25-10 wins in the first two sets. Oregon State rallied in set three to fend off the Huskies, taking the third set 28-26. Washington closed the match out in set four with a 25-14 win.
The match was opened with a game of runs in the first set. After the teams drew to an early 4-4 tie, the Huskies went on a 7-0 run to force an Oregon State timeout while trailing 11-4. The teams split the next six points out of the timeout, followed by a Beaver 7-0 run to knot the game at 14-14.
Washington answered with a 5-0 run before Lindsey Schell got a kill and Anastasija Svetnik recorded a service ace to cut the Huskies' lead to three, 19-16. The Huskies took six of the next seven points to close out the set, 24-17.
The Huskies jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in set two. A Schell kill sparked a 7-3 Beaver run, tying the game at 8-8. Washington responded with a 3-0 run that was ended by a Kateryna Tkachenko kill, cutting the OSU deficit to two at 11-9. The Huskies took the next point as they went on for the set win.
Tkachenko ignited a 5-2 run to open up set three for the Beavers. Following a 10-10 tie, Washington pulled in front with a 4-1 run to force OSU to call a timeout. Oregon State claimed eight of the next 10 points following the timeout to flip the script with a 19-16 lead as Washington called a timeout.
The Huskies took a 20-19 lead with a 4-0 run after the timeout, but a Tkachenko kill and Ellie Turner service ace put the Beavers back on top, 21-20. After three OSU set points were fought off by Washington, Mychael Vernon gave the Beavers their final set point with a kill as a Husky attacking error on the next rally locked in set three for Oregon State, 28-26.
Set three was opened with a split of the first six points. A 6-1 Husky run put them up 9-4 and force Oregon State to call a timeout. After Washington took a 13-5 lead, the Beavers went on a 3-0 run behind an Izzi Szulczewski kill and service ace to bring them within five. The Huskies went on to extend its lead and win the match.
- Freshman Mychael Vernon made her career debut and first career start as she registered a team-leading 10 kills, six digs, a block, an assist, and a service ace.
- Freshman Izzi Szulczewski posted her fourth double-double in as many games with a team-high 29 assists and game-high 12 digs.
- Senior Maddie Goings posted a team-best 12 digs.
- Oregon State finished with 44 digs compared to Washington's 39.
