Buffaloes Sweep Utah State

Feb 7, 2021

BOULDER – Colorado women's tennis swept (7-0) Utah State Sunday afternoon in the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center to improve to 3-1 this season.

"I was very happy with our doubles point today," said head coach Danielle Steinberg. "All three teams came out aggressive which helped us set the tone for the rest of the day. We still have work to do on the doubles court but we are definitely moving in the right direction."

The Buffs made quick work of the Aggies (1-3), sweeping the doubles points as Sophia Derivan and Sara Nayar continue their undefeated streak at four-straight in the No.1 doubles spot. Ky Ecton and Fleur Eggink won the No.2 match by a score of 6-2, while Maria Campos and Megan Forster led the way with a 6-0 win in the No.3 doubles spot. Derivan and Nayar clinched the point with a 6-1 win.

Out of the break, Derivan continued her unbeaten record in singles as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Zara Ryan in the No.2 singles match. Derivan is 8-0 this season in combined singles and doubles play. Nayar closed out her match in the No.1 singles position against Carolina Millan in a similar fashion, 6-0, 6-1.

As Antonia Balzert battled in the No.3 match in the only three-set match today, Campos and Forster came out and made quick work on their opponents in the No.5 and No.4 singles matches, respectfully. Campos clinched the match for Colorado with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Renata Lombera, followed by Forster defeating Gabrielle Dekkers 6-0, 6-3.

Balzert went a tough three sets with Lisa Kung in the No.3 singles match, taking the first set 6-4 before dropping the second 7-5. She flipped the second set score in the third to take the win, leaving only the No.6 singles match to finish with Eggink defeating Annaliese County 6-4, 6-1.

"Overall, we are just looking to get better each match we play, and we were able to do just that today," said Steinberg. "I'm looking forward to a good week of practice and another good opportunity to improve Saturday against Wyoming."
