First Big Spike Goes to Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – No. 15 Stanford dropped a 3-2 decision at California, Friday, in Haas Pavilion.

Cal (1-6) knocked off Stanford (0-3) for the first time since 2011, snapping a 16-match winning streak by the Cardinal.

At a team, Stanford out hit Cal, .192 to .131. The Cardinal also held a 16.0 to 6.0 advantage in blocks. The Bears registered 12 aces, while both teams finished with 82 digs.

Redshirt freshman Caitie Baird led all players with career-highs in kills (16) and digs (14) for her first career double-double. Sophomore Kendall Kipp added 15 kills and a career-high 16 digs for a double-double of her own.

Sophomore setter Selina Xu finished with a career-best 43 assists to go with nine digs, a career-high six blocks and two aces. Freshman libero Elena Oglivie registered 21 digs for the second straight match.

Sophomore outside hitter Natalie Berty tallied nine kills and 14 digs for Stanford, while redshirt freshman middle blocker McKenna Vicini added a career-high nine kills and six blocks. Freshman middle blocker Annabelle Smith notched seven kills and a match-high eight blocks.

Cal was led by Katarina Pantovic's 15 kills and 12 digs. Setter Isabel Potter totaled 33 kills and a match-high 23 digs.

Stanford and Cal meet again on Sunday at Maples Pavilion. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks.
