Cougars Post Pair of Road Wins in Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. – Washington State Tennis recorded a pair of wins in Spokane against Montana State and Gonzaga Sunday. The Cougars improved to 4-2 with a 7-0 win over the Bobcats in the morning and capped the day with a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs. Both matches were played at Gonzaga's Stevens Center.
 
In the morning match against Montana State, WSU dropped the No. 1 doubles match but clinched the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The Cougars then swept all six singles matches highlighted by senior Melisa Ates's win at No. 6 for her 92nd career win, tying Ksenia Googe for the fifth-most wins in program history.
 
In the afternoon meeting against Gonzaga, the Cougars made a small change to their doubles lineup and the result was a doubles sweep for WSU and a 1-0 lead. In singles play, sophomore Savanna Ly-Nguyen opened with a win at No. 5 and Ates gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead with a win at No. 6, her 93rd career win, putting her in sole possession of the fifth-most wins in WSU history. No. 55-ranked Senior Michaela Bayerlova clinched things for the Cougars with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1.
 
Washington State heads to Seattle next Saturday for The Boeing Apple Cup Series against Washington.
