Water Polo Opens the Season 3-0 After Defeating SDSU

Feb 14, 2021

TEMPE, ARIZ.-- Get the brooms out! The Arizona State Sun Devil water polo team concluded their opening weekend of play at Mona Plummer in sweep fashion taking all three games against San Diego State. The Sun Devils beat the Aztecs 11-5 to remain undefeated through their first week of play. This opening weekend, ASU scored a combined 46 goals in their games against SDSU (0-3).

The game got off to a slow start from both sides in the first period after each team scored only one goal, but ASU fired up their offense, and tallied 10 goals over the next three periods.

Head coach Todd Clapper noted the slow start, but praised his team's in-game adjustments, "We got to see a lot of things that we had to adjust to defensively and offensively, so that was really great for us to have to make adjustments in game and react as things were happening."

Goalie Itzahiana Baca got the start and held SDSU to just one goal off of 20 shots, a shooting percentage of 5% to end the weekend strong. Baca received help from the Sun Devil defense in the second and third period as the Aztecs were held to 0's across the board as Blaire McDowell led the team with five steals and Bente Rogge followed with three steals.

Luca Petovary backed up her strong start from Saturday's game, and scored two goals on Sunday to put her at 12 on the season. Three other Sun Devils also recorded two goals against the Aztecs on Sunday.

Chelsea Karimazondo replaced Baca in the fourth period and allowed the final Aztec goals to close out the weekend for the Sun Devils.
