LA QUINTA, Calif. – Oregon opened a busy week in the California Desert by shooting 5 over to sit in a tie for 11th after the opening round against a strong field The Prestige on Monday at the Greg Norman Course at PGA West. Tom Gueant turned in the low individual round of the day, shooting an even-par 71, putting him in a tie for 25th.
 
How It Happened: Gueant kicked things into gear right off the bat, making back-to-back birdies at holes 12 and 13 after starting his day with a pair of pars. A double bogey at 15 dropped him back to even, though, where he stayed until the turn. He birdied the par-4 first hole but gave that shot back with a bogey at the third hole, then made six straight pars to finish his day.
 
Yuki Moriyama and shot a 1-over 72 and is tied for 42nd. He shot a 1-over 37 on the back nine to start his day, despite making a triple bogey at the par-4 15th. He then made one birdie and one bogey on the front to shoot even par on his second nine.
 
Owen Avrit and Craig Ronne each opened with a 2-over 73 to sit in a tie for 52nd. Avrit birdied both par 5s on the back nine but bogeyed holes 13, 14 and 16 to sit at 1 over at the turn. He made eight pars and a bogey coming home to finish 1 over. Ronne made three birdies but carded a pair of double bogeys and a had one bogey, but finished strong with an even-par 35 on the front nine. Nate Stember had a roller coaster day with six birdies but five bogeys, a double and a triple to shoot 75.
 
Senior transfer Jake Sollon fired a bogey-free 4-under 68 and is tied for second, three shots off the lead playing in The Prestige Individual Invitational at Coral Mountain Golf Club. He made back-to-back birdies at holes five and six then birdied both par 5s on the back nine to shoot a 2-under 34 on each nine.
