SAN DIEGO – The #5 Washington Huskies started their Sunday doubleheader with a shutout, defeating the San Diego Toreros 5-0. Sarah Willis was excellent in the circle, not allowing a hit until the sixth inning. Extra-base hits from Lilly Agan, Sis Bates, and Madison Huskey drove the scoring for Washington.

Making her first collegiate start, Willis was excellent all game long. Willis walked a batter in the first inning, then retired 16 consecutive batters. She would only allow two hits in the game, two singles in the sixth that led to Gabbie Plain taking over and finishing off the win.

Agan had two hits for the Huskies, her second consecutive multi-hit game. The freshman drove in a run with her double early on, then came around to score later. Bates had her fourth multi-RBI game of 2021, her most in a single season since 2018.

  • Fourth Inning: Gibson's leadoff triple put the Huskies in a great position to take the lead. It would be Agan's double that brought Gibson home for the game's first run.
  • Sixth Inning: With two outs and two on, Bates came through with her 15th career triple. That would score Agan and Willis to make it 3-0.
  • Seventh Inning: Huskey put an exclamation point on the game with a big double in the seventh. The rocket to leftfield would score two more runs to end the scoring for the day.
  • Bates (1x4, 3B, 2 RBI) is the third Husky ever with 15 career triples, joining Ashley Charters and Becky Newbry.
  • In her last 13 plate appearances, Kaija Gibson (1x2, R, 3B) is 2-for-4 with eight walks and a hit by pitch.
  • Agan (2x4, R, 2B, RBI) has doubled and driven in runs in back-to-back games.
  • Megan Vandegrift (SB) has stolen at least one base every year of her career.

Washington heads to Hawai'i for a three-game series next week, with the first game on Thursday, March 4 at 8:00 pm PT.
