ROAD OPENER AT FRESNO STATE ON FRIDAY

  • Cal will play its first road game of the 2021 season on Friday at Fresno State
  • The Golden Bears last played on the road nearly a full calendar year ago in a 16-9 loss at USC on March 8, 2020
  • Friday's contest at Fresno State is Cal's only road game in its first five outings of 2021 in contrast to 2020 when the Golden Bears played six of their first seven games on the road

  • Cal is 7-4 all-time against Fresno State but the Bulldogs have won four of the last five meetings between the clubs including a 15-14 victory the last time they met in a neutral site game in Las Vegas on Feb. 15, 2019
  • The Golden Bears had a historic day the last time the teams played in Fresno when a 16-14 victory over the Bulldogs gave Cal its first-ever berth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament
  • Current fifth-year senior Anna Ellest and assistant coach Caroline Corzel were both part of Cal's 2017 team
  • Cal won the first six games of the series from 2009-14 before Fresno State picked up an 11-10 win in Fresno that was its first of the series on April 12, 2015

RECENT ACTION: CAL SWEPT BY UC DAVIS AND SAN DIEGO STATE IN OPENING WEEKEND

  • Cal started its 2021 season by being swept in a two-game home series against UC Davis, 14-8, and San Diego State, 12-11
  • The Bears were in both games early on, leading UC Davis 4-3 and trailing San Diego State by the same count, before both opponents used 5-0 runs midway through the first half to take commanding leads before second-half Cal comebacks fell short in both contests

  • Campagna leads the Bears with 10 draw controls and six caused turnovers while her four ground balls are second

  • Cal's roster includes 10 seniors with five on defense (Ella Annest, LizaBanks Campagna, Kamryn Lanier, Joanna Levin, Marina Smith), three on attack (Cameron Gordon, Marisa Kubera, Nikki Zaccaro) and two in the midfield (Sophia Cerino, Ashley Ward)
  • The top five players on the Cal defense are the team's five seniors at the position including super senior Annest, while Kuberra, Quinnlyn Mason and Zaccaro lead the attack, and Cerino and Ward are key players in the midfield
  • Cal's least experienced position is goalkeeper where the sophomore Drullnger was the only Cal player to start the year with any experience that she gained as a 2020 freshman
