Top Pairs Go Undefeated As Sand Devils Split Matches

TUCSON, Ariz. – The top two pairs went undefeated as Sun Devil Beach Volleyball split the matches on the opening day of the Cactus Classic on Saturday.
 
Arizona State (2-2) started off the day with a loss to Boise State before bouncing back with a sweep over Stephen F. Austin. The No. 1 pair today for the Sand Devils went undefeated as Katelyn Carballo and Lexi Sweeney won both of their matches in straight sets. The No. 2 pair of Emily Anderson and Aleks Sochacka made their season debut and won both of their matches in straight sets as well.
 
Match One: Boise State 3, Arizona State 2
It was a close battle, but the Sand Devils came up short against the Broncos to start the tournament. The dual was tied at 2-2 with the No. 5 pairs going to a third set. It took extra points and Boise State edged out Arizona State's pair, 16-14. ASU took the top two courts, but the bottom three all went to Boise State.

  4. Sierra Land/Katie Martin (BSU) def. Samantha Plaster/Lauren Weintraub (ASU) 21-9, 23-21
  5. Kaylee Johnson/Ellie McDonald (BSU) def. Lila Bordis/Maddy Salazar (ASU) 8-21, 28-26, 16-14 

Match Two: Arizona State 5, Stephen F. Austin 0
The Sand Devils got back on track in the second match, sweeping the Mavericks. The top two pairs continued their success, winning their matches in straight sets. Samantha Plaster and Lauren Weintraub at the No. 4 spot dropped their first set before bouncing back and winning the next two.
