Sweep in High-Scoring Finale

SAN FRANCISCO – Stanford (7-1) scored 15 runs on 20 hits en route to earning a four-game series sweep over San Francisco by way of a 15-13 victory over the Dons (4-8) on Sunday from Benedetti Diamond.

All nine Stanford starters had at least one hit, with six of the nine finishing with multiple. Vincent Martinez led the way with a career-best 4 for 7 day that included a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs. The round-tripper was the first of Martinez' career, and was one of four for the Cardinal on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Brock Jones homered twice in the victory, finishing 3 for 5 with two runs scored, a pair of walks and four RBIs. Christian Robinson (3 for 6) and Henry Gargus (3 for 3) also managed three-hit games.

The multi-homer game was the first for the Cardinal since Maverick Handley hit a pair against Fresno State on June 3, 2019.

Freshman Tommy Troy led off the game with a home run – his first career homer. It was the first leadoff home run for the Cardinal since Kyle Stowers' homer in the first at No. 5 Mississippi State on June 9, 2019. The leadoff home run was followed by the first of the day from Jones two hitters later as the Cardinal managed a pair in the opening frame to eventually take a 7-0 lead after a half inning.

Martinez hit a solo shot in the second, Jones followed with a two-run homer in the third, and Adam Crampton delivered a sacrifice fly in the fourth as the Cardinal opened up an 11-0 headed into the bottom of the fourth.

Refusing to surrender, San Francisco climbed all the way back with 11 runs on just four hits in the fourth inning – highlighted by a Jordan Vujovich home run.

Stanford's pitching staff issued seven free passes in the 11-run fourth, including three hit batters and four walks. All told, the Cardinal issued 10 walks and three hit-by-pitches on Sunday.

After the two teams traded a run in the fifth, Stanford scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to claim a 15-12 advantage. Though USF would add one run in the eighth, Joey Dixon would retire the side to keep the two-run advantage intact headed to the ninth.

Fifth-year senior Zach Grech continued a strong start to the season, closing out the game by retiring the side in order in the ninth to earn his third save of the year. Redshirt-senior Jonathan Worley was credited with the win after tossing four innings and striking out eight. The victory was the first of Worley's career.

Stanford will return to action on Friday when it opens a four-game home series with UC Irvine at 2:05 p.m.
