TUCSON, Ariz. – A strong opening round by the Arizona Wildcats, including a career best from sophomore Therese Warner, propelled the Wildcats through the two-round, opening day of the 2021 Wildcat Invitational. Arizona Women's Golf finished Monday's action in a tie, at 12-over, for fifth place out of 16 teams with a pair of individuals in the top 10 of the field.

The Wildcats' 13-under opening round was punctuated by Warner's career low of 65, which broke her previous best of 68 in last year's Wildcat Invitational. She buried eight birdies in 14-hole stretch, including three consecutive on the fourth, fifth and sixth holes. Senior Yu-Sang Hou gave Arizona a second player to shoot below 70 in the first round with a 4-under score of 68. The leading duo was followed by sophomores Gile Bite Starkute and Vivian Hou who shot 2-under and even respectively.

Conditions worsened throughout the day as the field struggled to follow up their strong-scoring opening round. The 16-team field shot 113 strokes worse in the second round.

By the end of Monday, Arizona was one of five teams separated by eight strokes on the leaderboard. Arizona was paced through the first two rounds by Yu-Sang Hou and Therese Warner who finished in a tie for tenth at even par.

The third and final round of the Wildcat invitational will begin at 8 a.m. (MST) on Tuesday, March 9 at Sewailo Golf Club.
