Beavers Edged By Oregon In Game Two Of Series

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Cooper Hjerpe struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings but took the loss as No. 16 Oregon State dropped a 3-0 decision to Oregon Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

Hjerpe scattered six hits in his fourth start of the season, and held Oregon (8-2 overall) scoreless through five innings. The Ducks, however, got on the board with a three-run sixth inning, highlighted by Josh Kasevich's two-out, two-run triple.
 
Hjerpe dropped to 1-1 this season.
 
Oregon starter Cullen Kafka earned the win after limiting Oregon State (10-3) to two hits with four walks and eight strikeouts in five innings. He improved to 1-0 in 2021.

Jacob Melton reached on an infield single in the fifth inning to extend his hit streak to eight games. It's the longest active streak on the team.
 
Note On Washburn
Jack Washburn worked a career-long three innings on Saturday. The freshman struck out four, also surpassing his previous best of two. The righty has nine strikeouts to just one walk in seven innings this season.
 
Strikeouts
The teams, who combined for 28 strikeouts on Friday, struck out a total of 22 times on Saturday, bringing that number to 50 over the first 18 innings of the series. That amounts to 46.2 percent of the 108 total outs in the series.

Oregon State's pitching staff has accounted for 27 of those 50 strikeouts. Sixteen of the 27 have been by starters Kevin Abel and Cooper Hjerpe over 10 innings.
