SEATTLE, Wash. -- Sixth-ranked Washington defeated No. 7 Arizona in the series-opener, 2-1 on a rainy Friday night in Seattle.

Washington ace Gabbie Plain (12-0) outdueled Arizona's Mariah Lopez (4-1) in the contest. Plain allowed one run -- a Dejah Mulipola solo homer -- on two hits with 16 strikeouts and one walk. Lopez allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

After a 27-minute rain delay to start the game, the Huskies scored in the first inning when UA dropped a fly ball with two out, an unearned run to open the scoring. They doubled their lead on a solo homer in the second.

Plain retired the first 12 she faced until Mulipola led off the fifth inning with her ninth home run of the season.

Arizona threatened in the sixth, getting two on for the heart of the UA order, but the Cats could not capitalize.

The Wildcats fell to 14-4 (0-1 Pac-12), while Washington improved to 21-2 (1-0 Pac-12). The two teams meet in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 3:30 p.m. MST. Game 1 will be a Pac-12 game while game 2 will be a nonconference matchup. Both games will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
