NCAA Champion

Mar 20, 2021

ST. LOUIS - Shane Griffith is a national champion. The redshirt sophomore completed his run at the NCAA championships atop the podium, Saturday, at the Enterprise Center.

Griffith becomes the second wrestler in program history to win an individual national title, joining Stanford Hall of Famer Matt Gentry (2004). He was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler for the Tournament - the first Cardinal to receive the honor.

The Westwood, New Jersey native registered a 6-2 decision over No. 3 seed Jake Wentzel of Pittsburgh in the NCAA final at 165 pounds. He now boasts a career record of 40-1.

Stanford leaves St. Louis with two All-Americans as redshirt freshman Jaden Abas, who placed seventh at 149 pounds, joined Griffith on the podium. The Cardinal recorded 35.5 team points, good for 17th overall. It is the program's seventh top-20 finish and the fourth-best mark in school history.
