Jake Cavano Named UCLA Student-Athlete of Week

LOS ANGELES – Junior Jake Cavano from the UCLA men's water polo team has been selected the UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Ready, earning honors for Mar. 16-22.

Cavano led the Bruins in scoring this week as UCLA captured the 12th NCAA Championship in program history and the 119th for the UCLA Athletic Department. The third-ranked Bruins opened with a 19-14 win over No. 6 California Baptist, with Cavano scoring a career-high-tying five goals in the opening round game. He also had one assist and one drawn exclusion against the Lancers. In the 11-10 win over defending NCAA and MPSF Champion and top-seeded Stanford in the semifinals, Cavano scored once while adding two assists and tallied another drawn exclusion. Then in the 7-6 NCAA title win at fourth-ranked USC, he scored twice, including the eventual game-winner at the 6:23 mark of the fourth quarter. He also drew two exclusions and had one steal and one field block against the Trojans. For the week, he scored 11 points (eight goals, three assists) and shot 61.5 percent (scored on eight of his 13 shots). Cavano was named first-team All-NCAA Tournament.

This is the first UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week award for Cavano this season and the second of his career.
