STANFORD, Calif. – The Washington State men's golf team put together a strong first round of play at The Goodwin tournament, as the Cougars finished their first 18 holes of play in fifth on the team leaderboard after shooting an even par; 280 as a team.
Junior Max Sekulic shot one-under-par; 69 to end his first round at The Goodwin in a tie for 17th overall. The Rycroft, Alberta native eagled the 16th and seventh holes on Thursday, and added a pair of birdies on hole 16 and hole one, to help him finish his day at one-under.
Fifth-year senior Nicklaus Chiam and graduate transfer Eric Hagen finished one-stroke behind Sekulic, as each golfer carded even par; 70 in the first round. Both players will open Friday's (March 26) second round in a tie for 20th on the player leaderboard. Sophomore Pono Yanagi ended his first round in a tie for 37th after shooting one-over-par; 71. Freshman Jaden Cantafio tallied a team-best four birded to end his day in a tie for 50th after carding 72 (+1).
Host Stanford leads the field after 18 holes of play, with a team score of 275 (-5). Nevada's Sam Harned and St. Mary's Blake Hathcoat sits atop the player leaderboard going into tomorrow's second round, as each carded seven-under-par; 63.
