Baseball Drops Series Opener to Cal

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team dropped its series opener to the Cal Bears 9-0 at Smith's Ballpark on Friday.
 
Utah had a tough time getting its bats going only totaling four hits in the game.
 
Cal jumped on the Utes early scoring three runs in the second and then adding a run in the third and fourth inning. They put things out of reach in the sixth scoring four more to go up 9-0.
 
Josh Giffins came out of the bullpen and pitched 4.0 innings only allowing three hits and one run. He struck out three batters. It was his first appearance this season.
 
Vinny Zavolta, Kai Roberts, Tyler Thompson and Gabe Singer each had a hit for Utah in the game. For Singer, it was his third appearance for Utah, but his first at bat and he knocked a single to left field.
 
The loss drops Utah's record to 4-12 and 1-3 in Pac-12 play. Justin Kelly took the loss moving his record to 0-4 on the season.
  
The Utes and Bears will play their second game of the series against each other at Smith's Ballpark on Saturday, March 27 at 3 p.m.
